The Danish authorities, worried about the coronavirus mutation, have decided to destroy all mink in the country. A similar fate awaits some 17 million animals. The Danish government’s decision was announced by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. According to the Danish prime minister, the virus mutated among minks and was transmitted to humans.

According to Danish health authorities, a mutated version of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was found in twelve people in North Jutland. The danger is that this mutation could affect the effectiveness of a future vaccine and increase the risk of the virus spreading not only to other parts of Denmark but to all of Europe.
Denmark is the world’s largest producer of mink fur. There are currently over a thousand mink farms in the country. According to the Danish authorities, more than 200 facilities have been diagnosed with coronavirus cases. Fur cattle have already been completely destroyed in one third of them. Compensation is paid to mink producers.
In June, following the outbreak of infections in the Netherlands, that country’s authorities ordered the destruction of all fur animals on affected farms.
