In Danish mink farms, Sars-CoV-2 has passed on to animals, has mutated and could therefore represent a new global danger. The mutated virus has already been found in 12 people in Denmark.
All minks in Denmark are being killed out of concern over the consequences of upcoming coronavirus vaccines. This was announced by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at an online press conference in Copenhagen.
It is about millions of animals. Mink fur is popular for furs, among other things. The virus had mutated under the minks and was transmitted to humans, the head of government said. The problem is that this mutation could ensure that a future vaccine does not develop the desired effect.
Warning that the mutation could spread around the world
A mutated version of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has already been found in twelve people in North Jutland, Frederiksen said. At the same time, he warned that the mutation could spread not only to other parts of Denmark, but also to the rest of the world. Mink farmers are being compensated, as Food Minister Mogens Jensen said.
Denmark is the world’s largest producer of mink fur. There are currently 1,139 herds and around 15-17 million mink in the country. According to the Danish authorities, crown cases have already been found on over 200 farms. The fur population has already been killed in 67 farms. After similar corona outbreaks in mink, the Netherlands decided in early June to kill all fur animals on affected farms.
