While Quebec maintains the idea of allowing meetings at Christmas as long as the situation permits, the current trend makes several experts fear the worst, who believe the government’s plan may fall apart.

“At first I was one of the optimists because we saw the numbers go down, but now we see it go up,” said Dr Alex Carignan, microbiologist-specialist in infectious diseases at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sherbrooke.
The situation is far from improving in the province, and even less so in Estrie: in just one week the number of active cases in the region went from 590 to 710.
It had 12 more outbreaks Monday than a week ago in the region, and 10 Estriens have died from COVID-19 in the past seven days.
“Under these current circumstances, I think it will be difficult to predict meetings at Christmas and we shouldn’t be surprised if we get bad news,” the Dr Carignan.
Estrie’s director of public health, Dr Alain Poirier also fears such an eventuality. “Based on the growing number of cases, yes, I fear that the decisions come from above and thwart plans for Christmas. It is the Prime Minister who will make the decision, ”he explained.
