Congo declares an end to the Ebola outbreak that has killed 55 people since it emerged in June

That epidemic, which began in August 2018, was the deadliest ever in the country with 2,277 deaths.

Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo:

The Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday declared an end to the country’s latest Ebola outbreak, after the outbreak killed 55 people in the past five months.

“I am happy to solemnly declare the end of the eleventh Ebola virus outbreak in the province of Equateur” in the vast north-west of the country, Health Minister Eteni Longondo told reporters.

The World Health Organization said the latest outbreak killed 55 people among 119 confirmed cases and 11 probable cases since it began in June.

As during the previous outbreak in the east of the country, the widespread use of vaccinations helped curb the disease, the WHO said.

That epidemic, which began in August 2018, was the deadliest ever in the country with 2,277 deaths.

News bulletin

The latest outbreak of hemorrhagic fever occurred as the previous outbreak had not officially ended and the country had taken steps since late March to combat the coronavirus.

“There remains a high risk of a recovery,” the minister said.
