Confused shopper by the Woolworths bacon label, “Made in Australia”

An eagle-eyed Woolworths shopper is puzzled after noticing that his bacon has been labeled with “at least 21% Australian ingredients”.

The man asked Woolies a question on Facebook about the supermarket bacon shortcut.

“Hi Woolworths hoping you can help clarify, what specifically are the Australian ingredients in your 1kg short bacon?” wrote next to a photo of the product.

“It claims ‘made with at least 21% Australian ingredients’ but also states that it is 85% pork, which means that the remaining ingredients (water, salt, preservatives, etc.) make up the other. 15%.

“So I’m very curious to know what the Australian 21% is and what the remaining 79% is.”

Yahoo News has contacted Woolworths for clarification. And while Woolworths explained its need to import pork, the supermarket did not provide a breakdown of the Australian ingredients in the product, as requested by the customer.

“At Woolworths, we are proud to offer our customers a range of short cut bacon products,” the supermarket spokesperson said.

“Like many brands, we use pork from the US and Europe for our short cut bacon range to help keep pace with consumer demand.

“In doing so, we follow strict country of origin requirements so that customers can read the labeling and make an informed choice.”

Buyers who support Australian-made products

The supermarket also recommended stocking up another variety of short cut bacon made with “at least 98% Australian ingredients” and “100%” of its range of fresh pork is locally sourced.

In February, Coles shoppers reacted angrily to the bacon sporting the “Australian Made” logo after discovering that less than 10% of its ingredients came from Australia.

However, it was not an “Australian Made” logo on the packaging, but actually a symbol of the country of origin. This logo was also featured on the Woolies bacon.

Shoppers have never been more explicit about buying Australian-made products.

Coles and Woolies received a petition in April to introduce a dedicated lane for Australian-made items.

As of Tuesday, it had more than 33,000 signatures.
