It’s a quiet ending, but you probably won’t see too many people complaining about Coin’s fate. Fitbit’s upcoming payment-compatible smartwatch will likely be cheaper than pulling out a card. And even if you’re not interested in Fitbit’s hardware, there’s not as much desire for a tech-savvy card as it was when Coin debuted in 2013. Tap-to-pay technology has exploded over the years since then. and Samsung Pay can work in those stores that still depend on magnetic stripe readers. If you can just use your phone or watch, why bother taking a card in your wallet? Coin has been appealing for a while, but its moment has passed.
