Liver oil is known to be excellent for your health in more ways than one! What if this old grandmother’s remedy was also effective against SARS-CoV-2?
Norway has decided to test this hypothesis and start research on the beneficial effects of cod liver oil against Covid-19.
A large-scale study
Oslo University Hospital looking really close 70,000 volunteers to participate in a gigantic clinical study on cod liver oil and the coronavirus.
In this country of 5.5 million inhabitants, it is a very important research effort and one of the largest clinical trials ever carried out in Norway, also one of the main producers of this precious oil of which the virtues for health have been recognized for decades.
This new study derives from an earlier one, the Koronastudie, carried out last March. After asking 150,000 people to answer a detailed questionnaire about their habits, the researchers found that regular consumers of cod liver oil are less often contaminated.
An oil rich in vitamin D.
A miracle oil to use in prophylaxis? “The difference is not astronomical, but significant enough for us to take a closer look.”, explains Arne Soraas to Le Monde, physician and researcher in the microbiology department of the University Hospital of Oslo.
And this result didn’t really surprise the researchers! Cod liver oil is indeed very rich in vitamin D.whose importance is already recognized in the prevention of respiratory tract infections.
Moreover, “at least one in five Norwegians swallows it every day” Arne Soraas explains. The reason that might explain because Norway is one of the three European countries least affected by the coronavirus ?
It’s probably still a bit early to tell, but Vitamin D deficiency is one of the ways explored by researchers around the world to understand some predispositions to the development of severe forms.
Several hospitals around the world thus administered vitamin D to patients and, combined with other treatments, it appears to have been helpful. We look forward to the results of the study.
