According to Google, with the new version 87, Chrome will once again be able to handle many open tabs at the same time more efficiently than ever, according to the company in a current report. In the future, browser resource management should be able to identify exactly which tabs are actively being used by the user and which tabs are paused in the background and then “throttled”.
The load on the CPU and main memory should be reduced again. The cards in the background should therefore only be “woken” once per minute, which presumably reduces the CPU load by five times and extends the notebook’s battery life by up to 1.25 hours in tests. Playing music and displaying notifications on tabs in the background should still work smoothly, according to Google.
Thanks to occlusion tracking, Chrome should also be able to recognize which windows and tabs are currently visible so that computer resources can be used accordingly. Chrome should start up to 25% faster and pages can load up to 7% faster. Chrome 87 will also have a forward / backward cache. This should allow you to skip back and forth between browser pages without delay, even when mobile:
Google starts with the Android version of Chrome, but users of the iOS version will have to wait a little longer. With Chrome 87, Chromebook owners can now also access a new feature called Search Tabs, which – well – lets you search for tabs better. If you click on the new icon, you will get a list of all open tabs, regardless of which window they are in. Windows desktops should then receive this feature later.
But the functionality of the address bar is also expanded. Thanks to Chrome’s actions, actions like “change password” or “delete history” can be started directly from the toolbar without having to access the settings for a long time. When viewing the new tabs, new tabs will soon appear, which you should be able to use to go back to the pages you opened last. The Chrome 87 update can already be downloaded and installed on the desktop using the browser’s internal update function (three-dot menu -> Help -> About Google Chrome).
