China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) reported Thursday that the Chang’e-5 spacecraft has completed collecting lunar samples and is preparing to take them to Earth.

The Chinese probe was sent on November 24 and landed on December 1 in the northern Mons Rumker region of the Procellarum basin, also known as the Ocean of Storms, on the near side of the Moon, with the mission of obtaining the first Chinese samples of an extraterrestrial body.
After 19 hours on the moon, the sample collection ended at 10pm Wednesday (Beijing time), and the samples were stored in a container inside the probe’s ascent module, as scheduled, CNSA reported. . .
The objective of the mission is to bring about 2 kilos of rocks that pierce the ground up to two meters deep. Once analyzed by scientists, they will help explain the lunar history.
If the probe returns safely to Earth, China will become the third country to return samples from the moon, after the United States and the former Soviet Union.
