His mother, Céline Ng-Chan, 31, contracted the coronavirus at ten weeks pregnant in March after a trip to Europe. Céline Ng-Chan and her 2 year old daughter, Aldrina had been only slightly ill. They had been hospitalized but were released after two and a half weeks, unlike Céline Ng-Chan’s mother, who, at 58, was close to death.
“I was not worried that Aldrin would catch Covid-19 because I read that the transmission risk [de la mère au fœtus] is very weak “, testifies Céline Ng-Chan al Straits Times. In fact, the baby was not a carrier of the virus when he was born. “My pediatrician said that the antibodies I developed against Covid-19 are gone, but Aldrin has them. My doctor assumes I transferred my antibodies to him during pregnancy.”, adds the thirty-year-old.
Aldrin’s situation is a textbook case: scientists know little about the risks and methods of transmitting the coronavirus from mother to child. The Singapore hospital should take the opportunity to monitor this and determine in particular the actual duration of protection of these newborns against a Covid-19 infection.
