The £ 71m star, signed by Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, tested positive for coronavirus on Monday and has since self-isolated, losing the Blues’ 3-0 win over Rennes in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Manager Frank Lampard explained that the rest of the group tested negative again after Havertz, 21, contracted the virus, but the Blues boss added that Havertz’s symptoms have “intensified” in the past few days.

“Kai showed up on Monday for the Uefa tests, so yesterday we reviewed them and all the others are negative, so it’s a good sign,” Lampard said.

‘I’ve talked to Kai a couple of times, he’s very disappointed because he just wants to play.

‘His symptoms have increased slightly today, but he’s fine and he’s just disappointed to be out.

“It’s just one of those things, but hopefully the isolation can help.”

The German playmaker actually only played last Saturday, in the 3-0 win against Burnley.

But Havertz now looks set to miss Chelsea’s last game before the international break, Saturday against Sheffield United, as the Blues try to score four wins per round in all competitions.

The 21-year-old’s involvement with the German national team is also in doubt, in view of the matches against the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Spain.

Since moving from the Bundesliga in the summer, Havertz has played 10 times for the Blues, scoring four goals including a hat-trick in the EFL Cup against Barnsley.

Meanwhile, Lampard hailed Jorginho as the “ perfect pro ” for allowing Timo Werner to take over the spot kick role after the striker scored two first-half penalties in the Champions League win over Rennes.

Jorginho had long been Chelsea’s penalty spot shooter, scoring his first eight penalties for the Blues.

However, the Italian midfielder missed two penalties in less than a month, against Liverpool and then Krasnodar – Werner then scored a penalty in the same match in Russia last week.

Lampard handed the responsibility to Werner after talking to both players and the striker scored two more goals in Wednesday’s 3-0 win.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, because Jorginho was flawless enough for us,” said the Chelsea manager. BT Sport on Wednesday.

‘Timo came in and scored one in our last (European) match. I had a conversation with Jorginho and his answer was perfect for a professional, as he doesn’t care who gets them, he just wants us to score. ‘
