Can Salzburg steal the lightning bolt from Atlético?
Sparks exploded as Atlético faced Salzburg on Matchday 2, with João Félix’s 85th-minute goal eventually settling an old 3-2 ding-dong in favor of the Spanish side. The rematch will have an extra needle, since the Austrian champions can deny Diego Simeone’s men an eighth place with a win in the city of Mozart. “Salzburg have the final!” local newspaper with exposed beams Kronenzeitung after the 3-1 victory at Lokomotiv last time. Atlético may want to keep an eye on Mergim Berisha, the 22-year-old with a string of victories under goal.

Fatal day for Gladbach, Shakhtar, Madrid and Inter
Mönchengladbach are sure to have at least one place in the UEFA Europa League, but the rest of Group B is up for grabs. Alessane Pléa scored twice at home to Inter on Matchday 5, but Gladbach still lost, while Shakhtar completed a brace over Real Madrid leaving Zinédine Zidane’s side under the Pitmen in the group. Now Madrid welcome Gladbach and Inter host Shakhtar. “The group table tells us that for us there is nothing but winning the last game,” said Real Toni Kroos with a shrug. The same goes for everyone.
Ajax out to deny Atalanta
Dramatic queens of the group stage, Atalanta managed to get through their first season despite losing their first three games, and have been prone to wild swings this season too, particularly following the 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool with a 2-0 win at Anfield. Thus, they visit Ajax on Matchday 6 knowing that any defeat would exclude them from the round of 16, with the Dutch champions eager to profit from their bad luck. Midfielder Ryan Gravenberch won admiring glances for his performance at Liverpool last time around. Can it shine again?
Olympiacos or Marseille discarded for third place
Olympiacos lost 2-1 to Marseille last time, but the away goal could be the killer in the final result. The teams are tied on three points, vying for UEFA Europa League berth in Group C, and with a head-to-head lead, Pedro Martins’ side hold the aces as they welcome Porto. Marseille boss André Villas-Boas is still hoping. “We will go to Manchester City and give our all,” he said after his coaches finished the group stage of 13 consecutive defeats. “We will put our faith in Porto to do the job against Olympiacos”.
