Half of Apple’s presentation revolved around the screen protector offered by Ceramic Shield. The first independent tests of the material have appeared and are not satisfactory.
Unlike the entire Android smartphone industry that uses various versions of Gorilla Glass to protect their devices, Apple has gone in another direction. Company officials thought they had enough engineers to make their own screen protection solutions.
The creation they created is Ceramic Shield, a material that integrates ceramic crystals into the glass to increase its strength. If you had watched Apple’s presentation, you would have thought that your new iPhone will be 4 times more shock resistant than the old iPhone.
A few days ago though, I found that while it does a decent job, as long as the glass on the back isn’t Ceramic Shield and breaks immediately, they’ll still throw in over 1000 lei for repairs.
Other than that, you don’t give up on the phone every day. Instead, you can put it in your pocket with chips, keys, or other items that could get scratched. Apple either didn’t think about it or hoped that no one would notice.
The basic idea is simple, JerryRigEverything posted its durability test on YouTube for the iPhone 12 Pro, and while the phone performed decently and predictably, the much-praised Ceramic Sheld doesn’t help you against scratches at all. The precious phone is easily scratched like any smartphone with a glass screen, with a screwdriver with a hardness level 6 on the Mohs scale.
The good part, if you can take it as an advantage, is that the scratches are not that deep, but they are also called scratches and affect your enjoyment of using your gadget. As a bonus, Ceramic Shield resists fire very well, although I don’t think this detail “keeps you warm”.
