Laos’ ministry of health has called on authorities and residents across the country to be vigilant and help limit the spread of dengue fever as the number of cases of the infection continues to rise, Xinhua said.
Cases of dengue in Laos have risen to 7,504, of which 12 have been reported since January, according to a report released Wednesday by the Lao Ministry of Health.
The highest number of dengue patients has been reported in the capital Vientiane – 1,710 – while 875 cases have been reported in Bolikhamxay province and 706 cases have been reported in Bokeo province.
Of the 12 people who died, four were from Vientiane, two from Bolikhamxay and Khammuan respectively, and one from Xayaboury, Xieng Khuang, Savannakhet and Phongsaly Province.
Each household must dispose of water from jars, pots and other vessels and cover those containers to prevent them from filling up with water from the outside environment, according to authorities.
In case of illness, residents should suspect dengue fever and undergo blood tests at a hospital, the report also shows.
According to the World Health Organization, dengue fever is one of the fastest growing infections, with Thailand, Laos, the Philippines and Singapore also having a high incidence.
