can you be immunized without getting infected?

A new British study that is partly reassuring, especially for the little ones and their parents. The research, conducted by University College London (UCL) with the Francis Crick Institute and spotted by Yahoo! News, suggests that some people may have “pre-existing immunity” to the novel coronavirus, and that without being infected.

The work of these two organizations made it possible to determine that antibodies against Sars-Cov-2, or Covid-19, were present in some subjects studied before the start of the pandemic, in early spring 2020.

Out of a group of 48 individuals aged 1 to 16, analyzed between 2011 and 2018 and not infected with Covid-19, at least 21 already had immune responses to the new coronavirus. Notably, 62% of 6- and 16-year-olds surveyed appeared to already be immune.

This study could offer a first explanation for the greater resistance of young people to Covid-19. “This could be due to the fact that children are more regularly exposed to other coronaviruses”, one of the authors of the study in particular argues.
