IPad fans haven’t had that much choice in a long time. Apple renewed several models of its tablet this year. But which one should you do? The iPad Air and the regular iPad have been extensively tested for 20 minutes.
First to the colored model, the iPad Air, where colored is a bit high. Although the colors – green, light blue and rose gold – appear very rich in images, if you hold the device in your hand, you immediately notice that the colors are very muted. In the test fixture, green could only be seen under the right lighting conditions. Otherwise the device looked almost silver.
Fleets of tablets
The iPad Air (2020) can do a lot of what the more expensive Pro model can do – and some even better. For example, the Air has the new A14 processor, while the 2020 Pro model has an A12z chip. It’s faster than the A14 in many, but not all benchmarks. Most users are unlikely to notice much of this in everyday life.
The new fingerprint sensor that Apple has integrated into the Air is really practical. The sensor is now located on the power button on the side of the device if you need it as a notebook. The fingerprint unlock worked reliably and very quickly in the test. With the Air, on the other hand, you have to do without Face ID. You won’t find facial recognition on the cheapest tablet. In times of the corona pandemic and the associated use of masks, however, this is not a loss.
Air versus Pro
The iPad Air screen measures 10.9 inches. This means that the accessories of the Pro model also fit the tablet, such as the Magic Keyboard. The price (from CHF 319) is high, but the profit of the Smart Keyboard Folio is huge.
In general, the iPad Air (from 629 CHF) is very similar to the Pro model. Both support input with the pencil (second generation), Apple’s pen. Handwriting display with the Pro model is even better thanks to the higher refresh rate.
Anyone considering buying a new iPad will be well served with the Air and can save money in the process. The Air costs 200 francs less than a Pro model with the same amount of storage space. If you really want a bigger iPad, get the Pro. Only this model is also available with a 12.9-inch display.
iPad for beginners
It’s even cheaper with the regular 8th generation iPad. This was also renewed by the manufacturer this year and now has more power. However, you have to do without the Magic Keyboard and the second generation Apple Pencil. If you can do this, you’ll have plenty of iPads in a compact 349 Fr case
And if it doesn’t necessarily have to be Apple, other manufacturers, like Samsung, also have tablets in various price ranges and even with a stylus.
