Karl-Heinz Rummenigge used the controversial “G15” match in professional football for harsh words to the four Bundesliga clubs who had not been invited.
“We have expressly decided that the area of competence lies with the DFL Presidium. I think we are well advised not to send impulse documents across the republic about what has happened to other clubs,” the FC Bayern Munich manager told Frankfurt am Main in view of the approach of the four first division clubs FSV Mainz 05, VfB Stuttgart, Arminia Bielefeld and FC Augsburg, as well as ten second division clubs. They argued in favor of a new distribution key for television funds.
These four clubs would put pressure on the presidium of the German Football League to obtain a change in the distribution of money. “We don’t want that,” Rummenigge said. “The four Bundesliga clubs and ten second division teams threw protective gloves at us.” According to Rummenigge, the League’s “solidarity pact” has been broken.
Even excluded clubs had previously criticized the exclusive meeting as lacking solidarity. Rumors from clubs accuse the “G15” of wanting to gain control of public opinion. Furthermore, the solidarity propagated at the beginning of the crown crisis is opposed by the elite rally.
What else is a task force for?
Normally, first and second division teams consult fully during general DFL meetings. Senior officials from 14 first division football clubs and Hamburger SV were invited to the originally secret meeting in the Airport Club, but not representatives of the DFB or DFL or the quartet with Mainz, Augsburg, Stuttgart and Bielefeld. This had already caused sorrow. The future distribution of media revenue has long been a controversial topic in professional football. Clubs under top clubs and fan organizations support more equal opportunities.
The distribution of revenues from media contracts from the 2021/2022 season onwards amounts to € 4.4 billion from national average revenues, which will be distributed among the 36 professional clubs until the end of the 2024/2025 season.
According to information from dpa, a general meeting of the DFL is scheduled for 7 December, but the decision will be taken by the presidium of nine members of the DFL. FC Bayern board member Jan-Christian Dreesen sits there as the sole representative of a top club.
More recently, the DFL Presidium also founded the “Future Professional Football Taskforce” with 35 experts from different walks of life – one of the goals of this task is to promote justice issues. Now the Bundesliga clubs seem to want to get ahead of this task force. At the same time, Rummenigge also said that the topic of TV revenues “was not discussed in a big way”. Other topics were Christian Seifert’s successor and the crisis at the DFB.
“Frankfurter Kreis” wants to meet again in the future
Discussions about the distribution of media income are particularly topical in the Corona year: for the first time in a long time, the revenues of the television sector are falling. “Unfortunately, we have the problem of about € 200 million less in domestic revenue and nearly € 100 million less international revenue. This means that for the first time in a long, long time, all 36 clubs will have less in the bag.” Rummenigge said of Bundesliga TV Revenue.
However, the economic imbalance between top clubs like FC Bayern and the rest of the 1st and 2nd league is not least due to the money from the Champions League. Last season, the Monaco side earned over € 130m from UEFA’s television business with their Champions League victory.
The “Frankfurter Kreis” was started by Rummenigge and the other top clubs Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen. The Bayern coach spoke of a “very nice match”. We are always ready to expand this group, Rummenigge said. It also seems clear that there will be more meetings in the future.
