Bug in Facebook Messenger allows you to listen to conversations

20. November 2020 – A leak in Facebook’s Messenger WebRTC protocol allowed potential attackers to listen to conversations unnoticed. Now Facebook has leased the bug.

Facebook has fixed a security flaw in the Android version of the Messenger app. This gave attackers the opportunity to establish voice connections without the user’s knowledge. According to a report by “Zdnet.com” the bug was discovered by Natalie Silvanovich of Google’s Project Zero team. The bug can be found in the WebRTC protocol, which is used for audio and video calls. As you can read in a bug report, it only takes a few seconds before the audio signals of the attacked device can be played on the hacker’s speakers.

The bug was discovered on October 6 and reported to Facebook. Had Facebook not fixed, the security breach would have been made public 90 days after its discovery, on January 4, 2021. (win)
