Today, Wednesday, Britain became the first country in the world to approve the use of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine to prevent Covid-19 and said it would be released for use early next week.
Finding a vaccine is seen as the world’s best chance of restoring a semblance of normalcy in light of the pandemic that has killed an estimated 1.5 million people and caused severe damage to the economy.
The UK government said: “The government today accepted the recommendation of the independent Agency for the Regulation of Medicines and Health Products to approve the use of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine against Covid-19.
He added: “The vaccine will be available across the UK from next week.”
The UK Vaccine Committee will determine who will be given priority to receive the vaccine, such as nursing home inmates, healthcare workers and the elderly, who doctors believe are at high risk of contracting the virus.
Pfizer-Biontech, as well as the American company Moderna, announced preliminary results that their vaccines are over 90% effective.
Pfizer said Britain’s emergency approval for the use of the vaccine marks a historic moment in the fight against Covid-19.
We commend the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency for its ability to accurately assess and take timely action that helps protect UK people, “said CEO Albert Burla.
He added: “We are expecting more licensing and approvals and are focusing on how to move equally to deliver high-quality vaccines around the world.”
Health Minister Matt Hancock said the program will begin early next week and hospitals are ready to receive it.
