Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to show his polite side on Wednesday night when he competes with Juventus Turin against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League. Not when it comes to addressing any goals, but when it comes to communicating with the referee. Or rather, with the referee. With Stéphanie Frappart, a woman leads a game in the premier class for the first time.
The 36-year-old French woman has experience dealing with stars. Frappart has already played two Europa League games this season and led the Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea last year. She is no stranger to Switzerland either. Last August she was referee of the Super League match between Neuchâtel Xamax and Lugano. In 2018 she whistled the Swiss women’s international barracks match against the Netherlands.
In France, people are proud of their country’s pioneer. “Congratulations to Frenchwoman Stéphanie Frappart, first female referee in the Champions League,” the French foreign ministry tweeted on Tuesday.
