Blockchain technology for newsrooms

On October 23, 2020, Verizon introduced Full Transparency, a blockchain technology. Official press releases published before this date are not tracked on the blockchain.

How the Verizon Newsroom is developing a blockchain solution

We are bringing this transparency tool to life in collaboration with some of the brightest minds in the industry. By presenting comprehensive and authoritative documentation, the experience encourages users to explore while providing a central repository for information.

In version one of this technology, we document all text changes made to our official press releases, from minor language changes to statistical updates. All details are timestamps, making them easily verifiable. The editorial technology also:

  • Helps confirm or reject complaints from outside sources, to combat the spread of disinformation
  • It reduces the steps required to confirm details and makes the research process more efficient
  • Create a reliable and authoritative source for confirming business information
  • Facilitates understanding of all changes made to official press releases

While we don’t track changes made to videos, images, and other creative elements (like enlarged quotes, infographics, etc.) in version one, we will continue to refine the experience through user research and prototyping.
