A letter from Queen Elizabeth II’s office relating to the blockchain sent the crypto community into a monarchical meltdown of speculation about the British ruler’s bitcoin (BTC) interest – with some jokingly suggesting that the 94-year-old ruler may be sitting on a stash of satoshi … or it could even be the mysterious author of the BTC white paper herself.
The storm in a royal teacup began when a UK-based organization called the Center for Evidence-Based Blockchain (CEBB) began publishing what it claims to be the world’s first “peer-reviewed blockchain science journal” earlier this year.
The magazine was met with disbelief by the British newspaper Financial Times – despite the publisher’s claims that it is printed and distributed to the magazine’s archives. British Library, the Cornell University library and other renowned learning venues.
But the president of the publishing house Naseem Naqvi – also the head of the British Blockchain Association he took the courageous step of sending a copy of the diary to the Queen.
Naqvi was probably as surprised as anyone else to receive a response (a copy of which she shared on LinkedIn), sadly not from the queen herself, but rather from a staff member named Poppy Whitworth, from the office of the monarch’s private secretary.
Whitworth wrote that she was “asked” to thank Naqvi and added that the queen “appreciated” her “thoughtful gesture”.
She added,
“Her Majesty was interested to hear that the publication is the first research journal on open access blockchain publishing available in both print and online.”
The FT was clearly tickled pink, with journalist Jemima Kelly joking,
“Hopefully, by the time we’re 94, we too will be able to garner some interest in these issues.”
Meanwhile, on a Reddit thread, users were also having a royal ball, with one imagining a scenario in which the queen – sitting on a pot of BTC – resolutely refused to hand over power to her son, the Prince of Wales, until he saw “these children go straight to the moon.”
Another Redditor joked,
“Twist: the queen is Satoshi Nakamoto.”
Even Twitter-based crypto celebrities were not to be denied their fun, with Binance Chief Changpeng “CZ” Zhao among the many speakers.
