Email of the day about reflation candidates and whether it’s too late
Eoin, the reflation trade seems to be well under way and you have repeatedly considered commodities (both industrial and soft) as an attractive investment over a long period of time and, at times, you have mentioned a possible investment vehicle. I suggest you present those ETFs / ETCs and other funds / stocks or a combination that you think will best cover this area at the moment. I think many in the collective will appreciate receiving such a list from you.
This is also in consideration of the fact that gold, PMs in general and PM miners seem to have to resolve their overbought condition and for the moment do not seem to be necessary as safe havens as world growth is increasing and neither inflation nor systemic system risks are perceived as major problems at this time.
Therefore, in my view, industrial and light commodities should be the better investment than PMs for some time to come.

Dear Eoin, I hope you and your family are well. This “rotation” trade seems to have gone quite far and I am feeling general foamy in the markets (apart from gold of course). Would you go with the crowd here hoping for more income? Or would you wait for a withdrawal (which today seems like it may never come) and maybe munch on some headlines / themes out of favor? Wishes,

It is interesting to collect your views on soft commodities. Some directly investable ideas seem difficult to track down relating to this issue in the UK market; I really appreciate your suggestions on how to invest in this and I’m sure others would be interested too.
Generally speaking, the markets seem to be moving very quickly at the moment e.g. Royal Dutch, + 5%, Glencore + 5% etc, so your guide on how to best interpret these trends you are identifying is extremely helpful in your day notes and comments.

It would be helpful to have a list of ETFs to carry out a number of different themes: 1) COVID recovery candidates such as airlines and hospitality, 2) value, 3) small cap, 4) general Asian exposure.
Eoin Treacy’s point of view
Thank you all for these questions which highlight the emotional difficulty of buying unlocks. When sectors and indices hit new highs, there is always the temptation to think that they may have already gone too far. The big question therefore is whether the animating factor behind the breakout has the potential to persist.
Bitcoin Mania is gripping retail traders in a flashback to fall 2017
This article by Claire Ballentine and Edward Robinson for Bloomberg may be of interest to subscribers. Here is a section:
“FOMO is slowly coming into play. We are just starting to see some of our retail clients borrow against their Bitcoin to buy more Bitcoin and this will ultimately push the rally to $ 20,000 and beyond,” said Antoni Trenchev. , co-founder and managing partner of Nexo in London, which bills itself as the largest cryptocurrency lender in the world.
Trading became so intense overnight in XRP that US cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase crashed, according to media reports. This resulted in a dip in the coin after the massive rally took it to a record high.
Coinbase’s official status page claims its website is up and running and that an incident on Monday at 10pm has been fixed. A Coinbase spokesperson said they are looking into Bloomberg News’s request for comment.
While Main Street investors may dream of hitting a jackpot, seasoned market veterans continue to be wary of the sudden boom. The world of cryptocurrencies is notoriously opaque, and unlike stocks or bonds, which are rooted in economic and business fundamentals, reading what makes Bitcoin tick can be impossible for even the most savvy investors.
“Whenever I see mainstream media attention like this, it usually leads to a sellout,” said Kevin Murcko, founder and CEO of CoinMetro, an Estonia-based crypto exchange. “The big fish need to lay off the risks, so they open the gates to attract retail kids to dump on. Not sure if that’s the case this time around, but it looks a bit suspicious. “
Eoin Treacy’s point of view
In 2017, legions of college students returned home for Thanksgiving and convinced their parents that investing in bitcoin was a good idea. The price jumped from $ 8000 to over $ 1900 in the latest Santa gathering. He then waived the entire advance in early February.
The experimental cancer vaccine passes tests on animals, passes on to humans
This article by Rich Haridy for Newatlas.com may be of interest to subscribers. Here is a section:
“We are excited to begin testing this vaccine in the United States to offer new hope to patients with lung cancers and other cancers,” adds Kaumaya. “Reaching this point where we can transfer our findings from the lab to the clinic speaks to the perseverance and dedication of Imugene’s clinical and research team, including staff from our Ohio state research lab, to develop clinical potential and commercial “.
The new research has been published in the journal Oncoimmunology, and the video below offers a more detailed explanation of how the new cancer vaccine works.
Eoin Treacy’s point of view
Cancer vaccines are already very successful in preventing cervical cancers. A shot to prevent some forms of lung cancer would be a game changer for many people. The question is not whether to buy when these new technologies reach commercial utility because the profit reward from success is so great.
