The leading infectious disease expert in the United States criticized: Anthony Fauci Regulators in the UK today Thursday to swiftly approve Pfizer’s Corona Covid 19 vaccine, one day after the mandate was announced in London.
The UK Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said Wednesday it had conducted a full evaluation of the vaccine before agreeing to use it in emergency situations.
Fauchi said In a video that was shown on UK news channels “You know I love the British, they are fantastic, they are good scientists, but they took the data from Pfizer and instead of actually checking it, they said well, we agree with that.”
He added that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was the regulatory gold standard and that the agency was evaluating vaccine data very carefully, which it described as appropriate.
“Because if we do something, we have enough problems with people who are skeptical of getting a vaccine anyway,” Fauchi said.
The skepticism comes from a large percentage of Americans who reject medical science, as well as those who fear the safety of vaccines developed at record speed.
“If we get over the hurdle here quickly and inappropriately to earn an extra week or week and a half, I think the credibility of our regulatory process has been damaged,” Fauci added.
In response to Fauchi’s criticism, the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency issued a statement saying it “carefully evaluated the data as quickly as possible without compromising the accuracy of our review.”
The regulator also added that its emergency approval has allowed “some steps of this process in parallel to step up the time required, but it does not imply that the steps and standards of safety, quality and effectiveness have been exceeded”.
Fauchi is considered the most famous member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force and has often clashed with President Donald Trump about how to protect Americans from the virus.
Members of President-elect Joe Biden’s team would meet on Thursday.
