(CNN Español) – Josep Maria Bartomeu has stopped being the president of FC Barcelona. This was announced this Tuesday through a press conference.
The club’s board of directors will also accompany Bartomeu on his departure.
“It was a thoughtful, calm decision, consulted and agreed by all the comrades,” said the president announcing his resignation.

Bartomeu became president of Barça in 2014, as successor to Sandro Rosell, of which he was vice president for four years.
His departure comes after Barcelona crashed against Real Madrid on Saturday at Camp Nou. But beyond the classic defeat, the club has suffered a series of sporting disappointments.
One of these was the overwhelming 8-2 defeat suffered in August against Bayern Munich, in the semi-final of the last Champions League.
After that defeat, Bartomeu was about to lose the best player in the club’s history: Lionel Messi. The Argentine expressed his intention to leave the club at the executive culé, but he soon ended up staying to fulfill another year of his contract.
During Bartomeu’s six-year presidency, Barcelona reached the second hat-trick in their history, consisting of the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey 2014-2015. In total there were 13 trophies Barcelona won during his tenure.
