At the Bahrain GP, the Briton is on the top step of the podium for the 95th time. Romain Grosjean had a bad accident to talk about.
The podium
- 1. Lewis Hamilton (GBR, Mercedes)
- 2. Max Verstappen (NED, Red Bull Racing)
- 3. Alexander Albon (THA, Red Bull Racing)
Lewis Hamilton won the Bahrain Grand Prix in the usual sovereign way. For the Brit, who was world champion for two weeks, it was the eleventh triumph of the current season – and the fifth in a row. However, for once it wasn’t the clarified performance of the series winner that was remembered.
Shocking Grosjeans Incident
In reality, the racing action degenerated into a minor matter just seconds after the start. After a collision with Daniil Kwjat, Romain Grosjean entered the guard rails uncontrolled and his vehicle turned into a sea of flames on impact. Fortunately, the Franco-Swiss driver managed to free himself from the burning car and, according to initial information, he descended lightly with minor injuries.
The fact that Grosjeans’ worrying accident wrote the history of the race was also demonstrated by the fact that he was named race driver.
Immediately again the safety car
The race had just restarted, almost an hour and a half late, when he crashed again. Lance Stroll at Racing Point collided with Daniil Kwjat’s AlphaTauri, already involved in the accident with Grosjean. Stroll’s vehicle stopped upside down and the safety car had to neutralize the race again.
Perez is embittered
Sergio Perez has become a tragic figure from a racing point of view. The Mexican drove in 3rd position for the longest time and, after finishing 2nd in Turkey, appeared to land on the podium for the first time in two consecutive races. But three laps before the end of the race, an engine failure suddenly thwarted the Racing Point driver’s plan.
Alfas without points
Alfa Romeo team drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi clearly missed the points in the championship. The Finn finished the third to last race of the season in 15th place, the Italian in 16th.
So it goes on
Two more races are scheduled. On 6 December the pilots will climb into the cockpit of the Sakhir GP. A week later, the 2020 season ends with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
