InAvatar the last airbender love is one of the central themes. Throughout the series we have seen several couples who have won the hearts of fans, such as Katara and Aang, Zuko and Mai, Sokka and Suki, but there is one that has remained hidden until now.
According to one theory, Azula was attracted to Ty Lee, one of her best friends and companions, who was part of her elite squad to catch Zuko and Aang.
The theory is supported by the princess’s past, as she was at the Royal Fire Academy alongside Mai and Ty Lee, where they became best friends.
But, when they met again, her outpouring wasn’t the same with Mai as it was with Ty Lee, as she also hugs her sincerely, proving that perhaps she was the only person for whom she felt true affection.
When Azula and Zuko’s team went to the beach, it seemed the Fire Princess was jealous of all the attention she got from the local kids.
But according to the theory she was actually jealous of them, as they could flirt with Ty Lee and treat her lovingly without any problem.
The Fire Nation was very traditional, so a homosexual relationship was frowned upon, especially if members of the royal family were involved.
In the same episode on the beach, Azula mocks Ty Lee for getting all the kids’ attention because it was so easy, it wasn’t a challenge for anyone. Those words made Ty Lee cry and surprisingly Azula apologizes immediately, something we’ve never seen in the series, with any other character.
A key point in Azula’s story was when Ty Lee betrays her to help Mai.
Azula was already expecting a betrayal from Mai, since she loved her brother more than she feared her, but Ty Lee’s action took her completely by surprise, as they had been best friends since childhood.
From that point on, Azula stopped trusting others, became emotionally unstable, and began to lose the ability to think clearly.
His combat performance begins to decline, as he no longer acts with superiority and coolness, but has been carried away by his fury.
The theory states that Azula would have interpreted the betrayal as a rejection, as a sign that she would never be with Ty Lee.
Eventually Azula is captured by her brother, while Ty Lee was freed from the dungeon she was in and soon joined the Kyoshi warriors.
Thanks to the comics we know that just over a year later Ty Lee returned to the circus where she worked before Azula summoned her on a mission to capture the Avatar, while the whereabouts of the Fire Princess remains a mystery.
