5. November 2020 – With an extension of the Cortex-A78 architecture presented for smartphones of up to eight powerful cores and eight megabytes of Level 3 cache, ARM wants to enable the construction of Cortex-based high-performance PCs.
The ARM chip designer is placing its Cortex-A78 architecture for smartphones and tablets presented in May 2020 under the name A78C in an extended version for laptops and desktops. The difference from the smartphone variant: multiple cores per cluster are possible. Cortex-A78C licensees can combine up to eight large cores in a cluster in their CPUs: with the A78 smartphone variant, a maximum of four high-end cores are possible. The level 3 cache size also increases to 8 megabytes in the A78C.
Together with the Mali-G78 GPU, according to ARM, high-performance PCs, laptops and 2-in-1 devices can be implemented with the A78C CPU platform. Nothing is known about the availability date of the first A78C-based chips and partners wishing to license the technology. (ubi)
