Apple has not disclosed some major limitations of its M1 SoC

Unveiled at Apple’s latest event, the brand’s new M1 SoC promises to bring new computing capabilities to the brand’s computers. The promises are many and the earnings presented place us above the competition.

Meanwhile, Apple has ended up not revealing everything about the new M1, leaving out some details. These are not very positive and represent some limitations that this SoC ends up having and that it brings to Apple computers.

Something the brand has had for a few years, more specifically from 2018, is support for external eGPUs or GPUs. These external graphics cards allow you to bring all the additional processing that some applications need to any computer.

Apple should have had this capability in its M1, as the computers being upgraded have Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports. In fact, and as reported on all new computers, this support does not exist.

SoC M1 does not support eGPU

To reinforce this idea, Apple has removed the popular Blackmagic eGPU from its accessories list. This is widely used to compensate for the absence of a dedicated graphics card on some Apple computers and thus address this component.

Another change that has been discovered now with the launch of the M1 was the presence of only 2 USB-C ports on the MacBook Pro. While that's the same number that exists in the simpler model, which it replaces, it would have been interesting to see an update in this area.

RAM is limited on these computers

Finally, and this is another important limitation, the maximum RAM capacity in new computers is limited. Only a maximum of 16GB RAM can be placed on these machines, which may limit some Mac Mini or MacBook Pro users.

These are important details and limitations for the new M1 that the Cupertino giant did not reveal at its event. Users end up having contact with this reality only at the time of purchase or later when they want to connect their peripherals.
