Apple accused by consumer groups of slowing iPhone

The international group Euroconsummers denounces Apple’s use of obsolescence practices (to reduce the capacity of its products). The tech giant is thus accused of intentionally slowing down its electronic devices.

At stake are the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus which will have been developed and sold in a “non-functional” way that would later encourage consumers to purchase the latest and greatest iPhone.

Belgium and Spain, member countries of Euroconsumers, will proceed with a lawsuit against a US multinational. In 2021, Italy and Portugal also admit that they accused Apple of having secretly updated the software of the iPhone 6 models, knowing, from the beginning, the consequent changes. Among some of the anomalies observed in electronic devices, slowness, loss of performance and the shutdown unexpected from them.

In Europe, Euro consumers have sought not only to compensate owners of these iPhone models, but also to encourage the creation of more sustainable mobile phones. However, the lack of a satisfactory solution now brings the case to court, with a trademark indictment of unfair, deceptive and aggressive commercial practices in the European Union.

In the United States, the situation was more cordially resolved as Apple confirmed what had happened and compensated the injured customers, agreeing to pay $ 113 million to dissatisfied consumers. In this way, the brand will have resolved the allegations of 33 American states.

Despite the allegations, Apple says the changes made to the range of cell phones are just updates that aim to extend battery life and reduce failures that occur over time.
