Bratislava, February 12 (TASR) – Antibiotics don’t work on the flu, so patients shouldn’t push for a prescription in this case. This is advised by the Public Health Office (ÚVZ) of the Slovak Republic at the time of the nationwide influenza epidemic.

The flu needs to be treated. Hygienists recommend medications to relieve headaches and muscles and those to reduce fever. “This disease can also cause serious conditions, such as pneumonia or inflammation of the heart muscle.” writes ÚVZ SR stating that peace during treatment is important.

Influenza viruses often change their properties. The disease comes on suddenly. Symptoms include fever over 38 degrees Celsius, joint and headache, often behind the eyes, dry and irritating cough, rhinitis and sore throat. “The flu is not a trivial disease”, I write hygienists.

People can also have a cold at this time. It comes on gradually and not suddenly like the flu. People’s joints rarely hurt, one of the possible symptoms is a cough. Rhinitis and sore throat appear from the very beginning, the temperature does not exceed 38 degrees Celsius.

Colds can be treated with medicines to relieve cough or fever. It is important to drink enough fluids. Symptoms tend to subside within two to five days. In diseases caused by bacteria, the doctor decides on the need to administer antibiotics.

The most effective protection against flu is vaccination, in Slovakia it is covered by all health insurance companies. They especially recommend it to the chronically ill, the elderly, those with weakened immunity or healthcare professionals.

However, other preventive measures must also be considered. ÚVZ recommends that you ventilate properly and wash your hands. It is also important to dress appropriately or avoid areas with a high concentration of people. Ventilation is effective and frequent, especially in kindergartens, schools and workplaces.

The spread of the disease between kindergartens can be prevented with morning checks before the child joins the team. Sufficient rest or proper nutrition with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and fluids can also help people. Some recommendations also include limiting hand administration during flu season. Tissues must be used when sneezing.
