The second Android component that will soon become modular is the so-called Android Runtime. This is the runtime environment that describes the requirements of a given runtime system that are available and specified at the runtime of programs. With the introduction of Android 4.4 KitKat, Runtime replaced the Dalvik engine at that time and has been an integral part of the Google OS ever since.
The benefit for users: Since almost all elements are apps on Android, Google could remotely fix them much faster in case of problems and security gaps. Implementing new features for apps would also be much faster.
The changes mentioned have now been officially confirmed by a Google developer: their introduction with Android 12 is therefore very likely.
