The Surprising Ways The Crypto News World changed in 2018
Today there are more encrypted media than ever before. The industry continues to grow and some of the biggest cryptocurrencies in the world have become household names. The price movements of Bitcoin are reported on the main media. There has never been more attention from the media – both good and bad attention – turned to the crypto industry.
Our friends at CryptoGlobe have recently decided to analyze how the world of cryptography has changed in 2018. They have discovered some surprising trends, including notable changes in the way we consume, analyze and report encrypted news.
How the study worked
The CryptoGlobe study was based on the CryptoCompare API. Using this tool, CryptoGlobe collected metadata from 64,605 articles published in 2018 in 25 news sites.
The result was, according to CryptoGlobe, "an interesting portrait of the evolving panorama of the cryptocurrency space, as market stories change rapidly from month to month".
Crypto News Themes Changed Focus throughout the year
The topics discussed at the beginning of 2018 were different from the topics discussed at the end of 2018. Some topics grew during the whole year. Other topics go up and down. Some topics have been gradually reduced during the year.
In their analysis of encrypted news articles, CryptoGlobe created a chart that shows news coverage of the main cryptographic categories in 2018. News articles have been classified according to topics such as Trading, Technology, Sponsored, Regulatory, Mining, Market, ICO, Fiat Currencies, Exchanges, Business, BTC and Blockchain.
Some notable results from this study included:
Sponsored messages and ICO reviews rejected
This is not surprising. 2017 was the year of the ICO. Companies all over the world were quick to launch the first coin offers to raise public funds for various projects. The encrypted news was crowded with requests for sponsored posts. Companies were willing to pay for their ICO in the foreground on a news site. Paying $ 1,000 for a post on a major cryptic news website could result in $ 1 million of investment in an ICO. In 2018, however, this activity decreased. Sponsored posts and ICO panoramas gradually decreased during 2018.
Trading commentary and Rose market
Because ICO reviews and sponsored posts have declined, real market analysis has increased. News websites have published an increasing number of articles providing professional market analysis. In 2017, the markets were powered by the hype. Many price increases were supported by limited technical fundamentals. A single piece of news would have sent the bitcoins to the stars. In 2018, things have changed and trading / market comments continue to grow among the major encrypted news websites.
Bitcoin has maintained its dominant position
The price of BTC peaked in December 2017. In January 2018, the price of BTC collapsed and the prices of Altcoin peaked. Some saw it as the beginning of the bitcoin end, and the bitcoin domain has shrunk. In 2018, however, this trend was reversed. Bitcoin's domain has increased. Bitcoin has continued to dominate online cryptographic news websites. Bitcoin continued to be seen as a flower in the eye for the crypto industry.
Articles in decline on the Blockchain technology
In recent years, many encrypted news websites have focused on discussions about blockchain technology. They examined the underlying bitcoin technology and other cryptocurrencies, for example, and explained that technology in a way that could be understood by a wider audience. In 2018, this trend has largely diminished. Instead, news sites have focused more on financial topics, such as the perspective of a bitcoin ETF, rather than the underlying technology.
The average number of cryptographic articles decreased in 2018
The average number of cryptographic articles published each month in 2018 peaked from February to May before declining widely throughout the year.
There was a brief surge in the number of cryptic articles in October 2018, just when the bitcoin was beginning its dramatic collapse at the bottom of the bear market. At its peak, the media published around 360 cryptographic articles a month in March. In December, that number dropped to an annual low of only 250 items.
Media Outlets is covering more Altcoin
Altcoin coverage has become more important in the last year. While the mainstream media originally focused only on bitcoins, today's media speak of altcoin in a similar way.
Ethereum, Tron, Tether, Monero, Ethereum Classic, XRP, DASH, Tezos, Cardano, Litecoin, ZCash and other major altcoins have appeared on the main mainstream media in 2018.
No single altcoin has come close to capturing the attention paid to the re-bitcoin. However, XRP and ETH have largely dominated the altcoin discussion – which makes sense considering they are the number two and three major cryptocurrencies by market capitalization.
"In general, coverage of the news on altcoins is not too shocking," reports CryptoGlobe, "with the proportion of news on altcoins top that match quite well with their respective market limits".
There were two exceptions, however: Litecoin (LTC) and Tether (USDT) both received media attention that was not reflected in their respective market limits. The halter has been an important story for most of the last year, while Litecoin is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies in the community.
