The film “Listen, by Ana Rocha de Sousa, is the Portuguese candidate for an Oscar nomination in the category of Best International Film, ”the Portuguese Film Academy announced on Monday.

Listen was the most voted among the members of the academy, in a choice of four Portuguese films proposed for discussion: Listen, by Ana Rocha de Sousa, Mosquito, by João Nuno Pinto, Patrick, by Gonçalo Waddington e Vitalina Varelaby Pedro Costa.

In a statement, the president of the Portuguese Film Academy, Paulo Trancoso, recalls that the film won several awards in Venice, “one of the most important film festivals in the world”, and “quickly became the most watched Portuguese film in the world. year, despite the critical moment “that the country is going through, due to covid-19.

These two conditions reveal “a vow of hope in the talent of Portuguese directors, who are increasingly recognized abroad and appreciated by the national public,” said Paulo Trancoso.

Listen is Ana Rocha de Sousa’s first feature film, a family drama inspired by a true story, about a Portuguese family who emigrated to London, whose custody of their children is removed on suspicion of mistreatment. The narrative follows the family’s efforts to prove to British social and judicial services that the suspicions are unfounded.

With the Luso-British co-production, the film was shot near London with a Portuguese and English cast, directed by Lúcia Moniz, Ruben Garcia and Sophia Myles. The film won six awards at the Venice Film Festival, including the Lion of the Future, for a first feature, and the special jury prize of the Orizzonti competition.

Listen premiered in Portuguese cinemas on 21 October, having since added around 29,300 admissions.

Should the United States Film Academy obstruct the fact that the film is spoken in English, Paulo Trancoso explained to the Lusa agency this Monday that it is possible to choose another candidate. “Hopefully there are no obstacles, only a specific committee will analyze the films. But we couldn’t limit the film to being a candidate. The film has the English language, the Portuguese language, the sign language, the linguistic context is adequate, it is an easily identifiable story about a Portuguese community, ”Paulo Trancoso told the Lusa agency.

The 93rd edition of the Oscars, North American film awards, is scheduled for April 25, 2021 in Los Angeles, United States. Oscar nominations will be announced in March.

The ceremony was originally scheduled for late February, but was postponed to April, in a context of a covid-19 pandemic affecting the global film industry and virtually all sectors, from production to distribution and exhibition.
