Ralph Groening is the new president of the Manitoba Association of Municipalities.
The Morris Reeve was elected for a two-year term on Tuesday afternoon at the annual AMM convention in Winnipeg.
Groening scored 60% (274) of the votes, while challenger Doug Dobrowolski received 40% (179) of the votes.
Groening has been a member of the board of directors of AMM since 2005, as vice president since 2012. He replaces Chris Goertzen, who has been president of AMM since 2015. Goertzen was mayor of Steinbach until October 24, 2018.
"We have to tackle some of the funding challenges," says Groening. "We need to tackle infrastructure challenges, I think it's probably the number one concern."
Groening says he understands that the province of Manitoba has limited resources, so AMM needs to clearly communicate where to find efficiencies.
Meanwhile, the AMM delegates also elected Reeve Brad Saluk of the RM of Brokenhead and Reeve Kam Blight of the RM of Portage la Prairie to serve as new vice-presidents of the association.
