Amazon Prime Video gets AT & T’s HBO Max, but loses HBO

AT&T (NYSE: T) wants to channel his viewers to his HBO Max streaming service. So in a new deal with Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN)WarnerMedia telecom division will be withdrawing its flagship HBO service from Amazon Prime Video Channels next year in exchange for adding the HBO Max app.

Customers who purchased the HBO service through Amazon channels will continue to be able to use it through the HBO Max app.

A battle for control of user data

It’s a subtle distinction between accessing services via channels versus an app. In the former case, viewers get a seamless experience and are able to sign up and sign up for the service directly through the Prime platform.

The latter is a more complicated subscription process that means leaving the Amazon ecosystem to join, but it gives WarnerMedia more access and control over user data. It is a battle that all media companies are waging.

Year, for example, it also allows users to experience services through the Roku Channel platform, but HBO Max has yet to make an appearance there. Like Amazon, Roku also retains control over a percentage of the advertising inventory on the channel for which it receives reduced revenue and has maintained ComcastThe Peacock streaming service went off the platform for months after its launch as negotiations raged. HBO Max, which doesn’t require a cable subscription, offers everything the legacy HBO service does, but also includes newer content, such as the upcoming release Wonder Woman 1984 movies, as well as original shows and programs called Max Originals. WarnerMedia also intends to launch an ad-supported version of HBO Max in the next year.
