IT: AWS cloud affiliate is a goldmine for Amazon boss Jeff Bezos. To keep it that way, AWS boss Andy Jassy goes all out and even throws the principles of iron out of control.
AWS, the cloud computing subsidiary of the online giant Amazon, is changing its business strategy: instead of pure online services, customers will not only sell additional hardware in the future, but also software that they can use in their own data centers. This was announced Tuesday (local time) by AWS boss Andy Jassy at the re: invent indoor show, which this year will take place exclusively online for the first time.
To this end, AWS will introduce two offline services (“ECS Anywhere” and “EKS Anywhere”). With the new services, cloud and data center applications can now be managed and used simultaneously. “AWS is increasingly becoming a classic IT provider like IBM, Oracle or HP-Enterprise,” says Holger Müller, an analyst at Constellation, summing up the development.
Following the trend
With this, AWS chief Jassy also admits that IBM, Google and Microsoft were right when they geared their developments towards a new “multicloud” and “hybrid cloud” world at an early stage. In this case, a customer deploys the entire IT to the services of many cloud service providers instead of commissioning just one. Jassy hesitated to take this route. AWS wanted to have its customers alone.
But because IBM was particularly successful with the concept, AWS had to take action. The corona pandemic has not only accelerated the migration of companies and institutions around the world to the cloud, but also to the world of multi and hybrid cloud. Jassy now intends to make its way into this market.
While AWS is by far the global cloud market leader with a market share of 45%, growth rates from 29% to $ 11.6 billion in the third quarter were rather disappointing. Despite the boom in the crown, that was the lowest growth since 2015. The pursuers may catch up, Microsoft, number two, grew 45% in the same quarter, albeit on a smaller basis. Amazon boss Jeff Bezos is counting on AWS profits. Jassy provides more than 50 percent of the Amazon Group’s operating income. Fund Bezos’ ambitious growth plans.
