Let’s say you keep your wallet full to download it on Black Friday, iPhone 12, PlayStation 5 and other things without which life stops. At the same time, let’s say you’re at the point where you make lists of pros and cons. I don’t know, but I can help you tip the scales.
PlayStation 5 went into pre-order and disappeared. It happened so fast that no one else has allowed you to gauge whether you buy a new console, a new phone or play with the money in the bag and start the race for the first million.
Fortunately, for me and a little for you, I have had the console for more than a week. The first reviews have appeared so far and I agree with some. I ignored or closed the others, because whoever put them online thought more about your wallet than what a new console or, that is, any new gadget means.
In essence, each new gadget is a physical object that fills a void in everyone’s soul. In my case, this has been the case with about three phones in the last five years and with the PlayStation 4. Can the PlayStation 5 be like that? Certainly, and on a more serious note, I have some impressions.
Which PlayStation 5 do you buy if you want to buy?
There is a version at 2,500 lei with disc support and another at 2,000 lei, called Digital edition (as if the other was not digital) only with internal memory. Whatever you choose, you will also receive a DualSense wireless controller. And Sony has prepared other accessories, such as a pair of Pulse 3D headphones, a remote control, but also a camera.
I have used and use the Blu-Ray version and have not yet installed any games on the disc, but the console comes with Astro’s Playroom game pre-installed. It is relevant that this is happening, but about the game a little later.
PlayStation 5, like Xbox Series X, is a next-generation console. Both have premium hardware, extraordinarily high performance compared to what the PS4 had (it’s absolutely obvious that it’s been seven years since that console’s launch), have a completely different design from each other, and promise a more immersive gaming experience. It has improved. never. To deliver? Obvious. But the console reaches the market a little further, and the games, well, last (sic).
Here are some questions you should think about before spending 2,000 lei or more on a console: How much will you play? what kind of games? do you (will you have) a good TV?
I currently have a PlayStation 4 Slim. I installed PS5 on the same set-up. The move to better hardware was visible right from the start. At least from this point of view, the purchase is justified. Where it is not justified, and this is the only good reason, it is in the case of the available games.
It’s a new platform, even if the interface is familiar, and that means that next year it will be used by developers to update their games. FIFA 21, for example, will only make full use of the PS5 in December. Until then it can be used in a compatibility mode. Not really a loss, but after playing Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5 I wouldn’t want to go back to more limited graphics either.
In relation to the questions above, it is also relevant which games you will play. The PS5, for example, has 825GB of internal storage (about 660GB you actually have). Of course, you can add external hardware to expand it. Xbox, for comparison, will also have some special media that you plug directly into the console and, ready, you’ll have increased storage capacity. It is important to consider the space, because, look, COD: Black Ops Cold War already scares you: 135 GB for a single game. I have about five favorite titles on the short list. I know I can handle around 500GB, especially since they each have or will have 50 to 70GB. I manage to limit, but I also like the design of the “digital” edition of PS5.
But we are talking about money. Do you give money on PlayStation 5 or not? I would have talked about Xbox, but Microsoft’s focus on games in Romania is much more limited than Sony’s, so PS5 is the recommended console. Yet.
How do you justify buying a console?
When I discovered video games, there was an internet cafe and I paid 10,000 lei for an hour. In today’s currency, with inflation, an hour at the Internet cafe for some games would cost about five lei an hour. Sure, there are gambling halls where it costs even more, but let’s say five lei for the sake of calculation and parallelism with the 2000s.
The console is a strange “animal” in the world of technology. While you can change the phone – you even have to push it – every year and the laptop has a lifespan of around two to three years, the console is somewhat guaranteed for five years. Five years have passed between the first PlayStation and the second. PlayStation 3 arrived seven years later and PS4 six years later. PS5 comes out seven years after PS4.
Sure, there were other models among each major version: Pro, Slim or even Super Slim, but the essence was the same.
PlayStation 5 launches in 2020 and, in a fast tech world, how long will it last? At least three or five years.
It has no battery, so the runtime is as long as the plug lasts and you don’t even have to change the battery after a while. You can change the TV whenever you want, but the console is, to some extent, a guarantee that you have a good device for a period of free time. Five years is the average so far.
It costs 2,000 lei, the cheapest version, to which are added the games. In five years you have 1,825 days. And so I go back to my calculations with a modern internet cafe. At a cost of five lei per hour, 2,000 lei ensure 400 hours of play. Do you play 400 hours in a year or five? Or 17 related days?
What a stupid calculation, isn’t it? Maybe so, but these are my impressions of the PlayStation 5 and any video game console. I have a PS4 and I want to upgrade to the new model, so I have two options: now or in late 2021. Personally, I’d get it in 2021, when a beautiful list of PS5-ready games will be created.
The question “is the purchase justified?” does not hold up for the reasons indicated above.
If you want to justify the price, you can do it any way. Here is another reason. You can’t make a gaming PC, at 2,000 lei, which will be useful for more than a year. You can rely on cloud gaming on any device, but it’s still not the dream scenario, yet.
PlayStation 5 introduces gaming to the 4K era. I know, a little later than it should have been, but it is. At the same time, it will popularize the concept of ray-tracing and games will be more realistic. This will push users to buy better TVs too. Basically, with PS5 and Xbox Series X we will see a development of televisions in the gaming area. LG has already taken it ahead of the others.
PlayStation 5 also has a pre-installed game. What about him, actually?
I shouldn’t forget Astro’s playroom. It’s that game I told you is pre-installed, but it’s absolutely ignorant. The game doesn’t matter, it’s a kind of Mario with robots and three-dimensional movement. The game is there for Sony to show you why the DualSense controller is special.
DualSense has two important features: a completely new system for the vibrations you somehow feel in space. Anything okay? It vibrates only to your right. Is there something ahead? Flip forward. And the second feature is my favorite: the triggers are adaptive. It’s a tactile system first introduced on this controller so you have a “depth” to what you control in the game. In short, you have physical feedback for the game that is digital only.
Astro’s Playroom is only available as an extremely complex demo to find out what DualSense means and it does its job very well. Games like Fortnite, NBA 2K21 and many more will make the most of this controller to make you feel like you are a small part of the game. Now it is up to the developers to make the most of this hardware.
