Which David Fincher film is your best? (Photo: New Line Cinema)
David Fincher’s latest Mank will premiere on Netflix on December 4th. For a director known for his cerebral and dark thrillers, this is a notable departure. Instead of commenting on the modern psyche, it harks back to old Hollywood and is an ode to the American film industry of the 1930s and 1940s.
One of the most talented directors working in Hollywood today, Fincher may have only directed a few films in his long career, but he’s usually good at what he does. Before watching Mank, here is a ranking of all the films he has made.
10. Alien 3: YouTube and Google Play
It must have been super difficult for a young Fincher to direct a franchise film after directors like Ridley Scott and James Cameron made their mark. Additionally, there have been reports of heavy interference in the study. Since then, Fincher has disowned Alien 3. The movie is bad, but it’s not a complete disaster. Only, it doesn’t come close to the first two episodes.
9. Panic Room
This movie was made by David Fincher after Seven, but it didn’t have its signature touches. It was still a well-edited home invasion thriller, and was backed up by Jodie Foster’s performance.
8. The game: YouTube
This Michael Douglas film is about an investment banker (Douglas) who receives a gift from his brothers. The gift is a coupon for a game from a shady company called Consumer Recreation Services (CRS). The game seems fun at first but it gets more and more dangerous. The Game is a gripping thriller.
7. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and Google Play
This Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett protagonist is about an aging man in reverse, and that naturally creates a lot of problems. Like Mank, this film was quite different from Fincher’s other films, with its sentimental tone. Far from being the best thing I’ve ever done, it was still a pleasant experience.
6. Gone Girl: Netflix
In Gone Girl, based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, the story and perspective shift roughly in the middle, and the plot twist comes as a strong blow to the head with an (almost) proportionate effect. David Fincher somehow managed to play that decidedly literary twist on the screen very well. The whole thing makes you guess to the end, which also leaves things upset. A brilliant film.
5. The girl with the dragon tattoo
Based on the novel of the same name by Stieg Larsson, the film is about an intricate web of murders, murders and disappearances. It stands as a simple thriller, and slowly reveals its true face: that of a thriller with notable political and social commentary. Both Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are superb in this film.
4. Fight Club: Amazon Prime Video
Based on the book of the same name by Chuck Palahanuik, Fight Club is all about masculinity or at least our understanding of it. The comment is ambiguous, and we’re still not sure if it endorses that ugliest, most violent kind of manhood or if it’s an accusation of manhood. Either way, Fight Club is a solid movie. The film is also somewhat better than the book it takes the material from. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton offer their best career performances.
3. Zodiac
Zodiac is based on the crimes of Zodiac’s infamous killer and hunting across the country to bring him to justice. The film could have easily rambled with so many characters and threads, but it keeps the viewer’s attention until the very end. The mostly frenetic pace sometimes relaxes a bit, as if leaving some room to breathe. The era is superbly evoked with little things that few will notice.
2. The social network: Netflix and Amazon Prime Video
Only David Fincher (and Aaron Sorkin) could have turned the circumstances surrounding the founding of a social network into a compelling business. After all, it should have been boring. Just a few nerds who brainstorm and come up with ideas, a brilliant but socially inept man who comes up with a system to rate his college women on the “hot” scale. But the writing and directing made this film one of Fincher’s absolute best.
1. Seven: Netflix
Fincher’s most important achievement, Seven sees Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman join forces to nail a killer who kills people according to the seven deadly sins of Christianity.
