Millions of people in our country are in danger of uranium radiation, Romanian researchers have found. The Faculty of Environment of Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) received money from European funds and was able to measure the level of radiation in areas where uranium is or was mined. The conclusions are devastating: people, animals, houses, kindergartens, the soil contain radiation above the permitted norms.
The danger of radon contamination exists in 18 counties, say researchers from the UBB specialized laboratory. Radon gas, which comes from the decomposition of uranium, penetrates the soil, rooms and over time can cause leukemia or lung cancer, writes styrileprotv.ro.
Researchers from Cluj have so far measured radiation levels in 5,000 homes, schools, kindergartens in the center, north and west of the country. The results show that the highest values are in Alba, Timiş and Suceava. The danger also persists in caves such as Orsi, Donne and Polovragi, where guides should limit their tours to a maximum of 12 hours per month.
In Europe the radon level in rooms averages 89 units, and in the areas verified by Romanian researchers it averages 176 units. In localities near former uranium mines, radon radiation is even 10 times the EU average. In these areas, uranium has disintegrated and polluted the air in homes and, researchers say, especially in ground floor apartments.

With prolonged exposure, the health risks are extremely high because radon is known to be a carcinogen.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than four million people have died so far from this type of pollution.
