Action game “Hitman 3”: Intel cooperation with ray tracing graphics effects

The development studio IO Interactive is collaborating with Intel on the optimization of “Hitman 3”. The chip maker’s software developers should help ensure the game directly supports Intel’s upcoming graphics chips. Intel has entered into such partnerships before, for example for optimization of its processor or for smooth frame rates with integrated GPUs.

With the action game “Hitman 3”, Intel apparently takes it one step further: as IO Interactive explains, there will be a patch after release that will integrate ray tracing graphics effects into the game. Intel will support virtual radius computation in hardware with the Xe HPG gaming GPU. The developers have also integrated Variable Rate Shading (VRS), which combines several pixels into blocks in order to reduce the amount of shading required for color gradations and thus increase the frame rate.

Intel’s Xe-HPG GPU, manufactured by TSMC with 7-nanometer technology, is expected to appear in 2021. Collaborating with development studios should ensure that showcase designs for your hardware are playable at first. AMD (“Godfall” with Radeon ray tracing) and Nvidia (including “Cyberpunk 2077” with GeForce ray tracing) proceed in a similar fashion. Ultimately, however, graphics cards from all three manufacturers should be able to display ray tracing graphics effects thanks to standardized APIs, perhaps only less optimized for one architecture.

Further optimizations concern the processors: IO Interactive wants to use eight computing cores and more, for example for more complex destruction physics in cities or for larger NPC collections. The first part “Hitman” of 2016 was one of the first titles with DirectX 12 support, including multi-core usage.
