Children infected with the coronavirus more often than previously thought, according to an immunity study conducted by KU Leuven and Sciensano of 362 children from Alken and Pelt, Het Belang van Limburg newspaper reported Friday.

Blood and saliva samples were taken from these children between 21 September and 6 October. Alken was one of the most affected municipalities in the country in the spring, while Pelt was relatively spared. According to initial results, Alken showed that 14.4% of the children had developed antibodies against 4.4% in Pelt.

This shows that children are more susceptible to the virus than initially thought“said Corinne Vandermeulen, research coordinator and vaccinologist (KU Leuven)”.As we did not know the general level of contamination in Alken during the first wave, we cannot say whether the virus circulated more or less in children than in adults.

The study found that most infections occurred through close contact with an infected adult. Schools don’t seem to have played a major role in spreading the first wave, he says. However, it cannot be ruled out that there were infections at school.
