The number of people admitted to hospital with Covid-19 in the United States has approached 100,000 – the highest level ever recorded – as the epidemic spreads and puts pressure on health systems.

98,691 Americans were admitted to hospitals on Tuesday, according to data collected by the Coronavirus Tracking Project, the latest in a series of daily recordings that lasted for weeks.

Officials in some states, including California, have warned of a shortage of hospital beds and staff.

Luan Woodward, who heads Mississippi’s largest hospital system, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, tweeted that all the beds were occupied by patients.

The number of new daily cases of the new Corona virus, which have dropped from record highs, has risen to more than 180,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The Baltimore-based university said the United States has also seen the highest number of deaths of people with Covid-19 since mid-April, as 2,597 people died the day before Tuesday. That number is close to April’s record of 2,607 daily deaths.

While vaccines are available, health experts expect meetings during Thanksgiving and other holidays will further accelerate the widespread increase in the number of infections.

On Wednesday, US health authorities warned against traveling over the Christmas holidays at the end of this month.

The United States has seen far more cases and deaths than any other country. The country, with a population of about 330 million, has registered 13.7 million infections since the beginning of the epidemic and the number of deaths has exceeded 270,000.

Globally, there have been more than 64 million coronavirus cases and 1.4 million deaths.
