The Institute of Transfusion Medicine of the Republic of Slovenia confirmed to STA that it had released the first two units of plasma for the treatment of an obvious patient a few days ago. They were then informed by the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Febrile Illnesses of the Ljubljana University Medical Center that the clinical condition of a covid patient with pneumonia had improved after such treatment.
Since the beginning of July, 280 blood samples have been taken at the Institute of Transfusion Medicine. plasma in people who have survived covid-19.
For the treatment of covid patients, they have 80 units of hyperimmune plasma ready, which contain a sufficient amount of the so-called neutralizing antibodies. However, they explained to STA that they have not yet performed the necessary tests for all the seized units.
Plasma therapy has a 100-year history of treating infectious diseases such as polio, measles, mumps and influenza ahead of vaccines. Recently, however, plasma has also been used to help patients with Ebola and MERS, also caused by the coronavirus. Therefore, in some parts of the world, patients in the hospital’s covida-19 stage have begun to receive plasma from those patients who have already recovered from the disease. That is, they wanted the antibodies from the pre-morbid plasma to neutralize the virus in the patient so that it no longer spreads and in this way it was easier for the patient to overcome covid-19.
However, various studies have not yet provided a uniform answer regarding the safety and efficacy of covida-19 plasma therapy.
