Along with hand washing and other hygiene measures, mouthwash could become a routine part of people’s daily habits after Cardiff University’s preliminary laboratory tests found it can fight the coronavirus in 30 seconds.
These results, which have yet to be peer reviewed, come from a 12-week study in which mouthwashes containing at least 0.07% cetypyridinium chloride (CPC) were found to show “promising signs” of killing the virus. .
In lab tests, the university scientists worked with various brands of mouthwashes, including Listerine and Dentyl. By mimicking the conditions of a person’s nose / oropharynx passage, they tested how the various ingredients in the mouthwash kill the virus.
In their report, titled The Virucidal Efficacy of Oral Rinse Components Against SARS-CoV-2 In Vitro, the researchers note that three of the mouthwashes tested completely eradicated the virus in the laboratory.
These early Cardiff findings aren’t the same as finding a cure – there’s no indication that mouthwash has any impact on the virus if it travels from human saliva into lung tissue, for example.
Dr Nick Claydon, a specialist periodontist, told The Independent he believes the research so far is “very valuable,” adding: “If these positive results are reflected in the Cardiff University clinical trial, CPC-based mouthwashes … could become an important addition for people routines, along with hand washing, physical distancing and wearing masks, both now and in the future. “

Next for the scientists, a clinical trial will take place that will examine the effectiveness of mouthwash in reducing coronavirus levels in COVID-19 patients at the University Hospital of Wales. The results of that study are expected to be published in early 2021.
