The American company Apnimed has found a new drug that prevents snoring during sleep and relieves the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea which affects millions of people around the world and causes severe snoring.
Obstructive sleep apnea affects both men and women, but is more common in men over the age of 40.
According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, preliminary results from clinical trials indicate that the night pill can alleviate these problems by up to 74%, while another drug called “oxybutynin” can act on the receptors that make the muscles that control the tongue contract. Apnimed managed to combine these two drugs in one capsule, and is preparing a clinical trial, while the British newspaper confirmed that the treatment could have risks, as the new drug, called “oxybutynin”, can cause dry eyes. stomach cramps and sleepiness.
Oxybutynin has also been linked to depression and suicidal thoughts in some children who were given it to treat ADHD.
Dr Neil Stanley, sleep expert and member of the British Sleep Association, said: “These are interesting preliminary results. Reducing symptoms is very promising … but more research is needed to find out if the effect is sustainable.”
