The extension of time spent in front of the screens and without physical activity poses health risks for two thirds of young people in France today, ANSES is alarmed in an opinion released on Monday, from the data collected even before confinement.

Among these dangers there are overweight and obesity, cardiovascular risks or diabetes, but also poorer sleep quality, lists the National Health Security Agency (Anses).

What worries us, and this is why we issue a warning to public authorities, is that among adolescents between 11 and 17 years, two thirds (66%) are particularly exposed to risks. for health, simply because they have more than two hours of screen per day and because they are less than one hour of physical activity per day, these are danger thresholds », Explains Irène Margaritis, head of the nutritional risk assessment unit of the health agency.

17% of this age group is classified in an even higher risk category, who accumulates less than 20 minutes of physical activity per day and more than 4h30 of sedentary life, ANSES points out, which was based on data from a study conducted in 2017, called Inca3.

At that age we know that these behaviors set the stage for pathologies that we will encounter in adulthood. And these habits of life, in terms of sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity, we know that we will find them in adulthood. », Explains Irène Margaritis.

Young people from low-income families most affected

In its opinion, ANSES underlines that ” children and adolescents from low-income or low-educated families appear to be most affected by high levels of sedentary living “. Another observation, a physical activity” which appears lower in girls aged 11-14 “.

ANSES is sounding the alarm as spring and fall inmates further worry about physical inactivity and the time teens spend in front of screens.

We need to rethink the place of physical activity in our life, both temporally and spatially. The rhythms of life make it very difficult to do physical activity outside of school hours “In adolescence, Mrs. Margaritis points out,” but we must also ask the question of urban planning, transport, the possibility of traveling by bicycle or on foot in the cities “.

Physical activity and the reduction of a sedentary lifestyle is not a plus, it is a necessity He concludes.
