Astronomers have detected asteroid VT4, setting a new record for the distance to Earth.

According to Universe Today, on November 13, the celestial body with a diameter of 5-10 meters crossed the southern Pacific Ocean near the Pitcairn Islands.

Asteroid15 minutes after crossing the closest distance to Earth on November 14, it was captured by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Hawaii.

The celestial body passed 345 kilometers from Earth from the altitude below the orbit of the International Space Station (UUI). Thus, VT4 broke the record for the asteroid 2020QG, which approached 3,000 kilometers from Earth in August.

His approach to Earth changed the orbital parameters of asteroid VT4. The celestial body has moved from a 549-day orbit with a 13-degree tilt at the ecliptic plane around the Sun to a 315-day orbit with a 10.2 degree tilt.

Thus, VT4 moved from the Apollo asteroid group to the Aten group of asteroids, with its circle now in the orbit of Venus.
