The announcement was made on his Instagram account: “I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronoun is he / she and my name is Elliot”.
The actor continued: “I feel lucky to write this. Let me be here. Coming to this place in my life, I feel overwhelming gratitude for the amazing people who have supported me on this journey.”
Page confessed that “I finally love who I am enough to follow the real me” and that he was inspired by many people in the trans community.
“Thank you for your courage, generosity and unremitting efforts to make this world a more inclusive and empathetic place. I will offer all the help I can give and continue to make efforts for a more loving and equitable society.”
Page uses the pronouns he and them and describes himself as transgender and non-binary, which means that his gender identity is neither masculine nor feminine.
Nick Adams, director of GLAAD, welcomed Page’s announcement that he is a supporter of the LGBTQ community. “It will be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All trans people deserve the chance to accept who we are. Today we celebrate the amazing Elliot Page.”
Page, born in Canada 33 years ago, became known in 2005 as the role of the thriller “Hard Candy”. Two years later, he starred in the independent film “Juno”, for which he received, among other things, an Oscar nomination.
Among the films he starred in were “Inception”, “Whip It!” and Flatliners. He produced and starred in “Tallulah” and “Freeheld”, and last year made his directorial debut with the documentary “There’s Something in the Water” about blacks in Canada.
Elliot Page will continue to play Vanya Hargreeves in “The Umbrella Academy,” a Netflix series about a family of superheroes, one of the show’s hit streaming services.
