As the end of another year approaches, world-renowned youtuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), held another of his already popular photography “blind contests”. This year the competition that involved 16 smartphones presented very interesting and even surprising results.
For example, in the first round, we saw the mid-range OnePlus 8T which costs around € 600, unquestionably winning against the top-of-the-range iPhone 12 Pro Max, which costs € 1,259. This was one of the most surprising results, especially considering the price difference.
What is Marques Brownlee’s “blind competition”?
This is a competition that is far from being considered scientific or reliable enough to be used as a rating table for a smartphone’s photographic capabilities.
Basically, in one format numb, MKBHD randomly places the smartphones aligned in each of the positions, replacing their names with letters. Then, the youtuber takes the same photo with each of the smartphones, posting their respective side by side on their social networks so that followers can vote for their favorite.
By pooling the votes of all platforms, the winner of each challenge is elected. The process is repeated until there is only one winner at the end.
Among the many surprises, perhaps the biggest is the victory of ASUS Zenfone 7 Pro. This is a top-of-the-range smartphone that has already surprised us, as you can see in our review, but to beat 2nd place in the DxOMark ranking it was guaranteed a big surprise.
I remind you that ASUS Zenfone 7 Pro is currently in 27th place in the DxOMark ranking, lagging behind most of the smartphones in this competition. This is a confirmation that this contest is far from the perfect tool to choose the best smartphone of the moment for photography.
However, it is also a very interesting way to confirm once again that even the tests carried out by DxOMark are not to be accepted as “absolute truth”.
